Notes on the worship services of Peninsula Bible Church Cupertino at 8:00, 9:45, 11:30 on the morning of Sunday, January 27, 2008. Notes written by Bernard Bell.
Worship leader: James Garcia
Host: Sharon Coleman
Preacher: Bernard Bell
Call to Worship: Psalm 92:1-4. A psalm entitled “For the Sabbath day.” Our service is structured around the idea of entering into God’s rest, leaving our bondage to come to Jesus.
I Sing the Mighty Power of God #59. Text (1715): Isaac Watts (1674-1748). Tune: Ellacombe (1868), William H. Monk (1823-89). A hymn of praise to our Creator, especially fitting as we have been working through Genesis 1.
| I sing the mighty power of God, That made the mountains rise, That spread the flowing seas abroad, And built the lofty skies. I sing the wisdom that ordained The sun to rule the day; The moon shines full at His command, And all the stars obey. |
There’s not a plant or flower below, But makes Thy glories known, And clouds arise, and tempests blow, By order from Thy throne; While all that borrows life from Thee Is ever in Thy care; And everywhere that we can be, Thou, God art present there. |
| I sing the goodness of the Lord, That filled the earth with food, He formed the creatures through the Word, And then pronounced them good. Lord, how Thy wonders are displayed, Where’er I turn my eye, If I survey the ground I tread, Or gaze upon the sky. |
God Be Merciful to Me. Text: Psalm 51, The Psalter (1912). Music: Christopher Miner ©1997 Christopher Miner Music. Track 3 on Pilgrim Days: Indelible Grace II, available from Indelible Grace Music. Music available online in the RUF Hymnbook. Also track 1 on Redemption Songs (2005) by Jars of Clay.
| God, be merciful to me; On Thy grace I rest my plea Plenteous in compassion Thou, Blot out my transgressions now; Wash me, make me pure within; Cleanse, O cleanse me from my sin. |
Broken, humbled to the dust By Thy wrath and judgment just, Let my contrite heart rejoice, And in gladness hear Thy voice; From my sins O hide Thy face, Blot them out in boundless grace. |
| My transgressions I confess; Grief and guilt my soul oppress. I have sinned against Thy grace, And provoked Thee to Thy face. I confess Thy judgement just; Speechless, I Thy mercy trust. |
Gracious God, my heart renew, Make my spirit right and true. Cast me not away from Thee, Let Thy Spirit dwell in me; Thy salvation's joy impart, Steadfast make my willing heart. |
| I am evil, born in sin; Thou desirest truth within. Thou alone my Savior art, Teach Thy wisdom to my heart; Make me pure, Thy grace bestow, Wash me whiter than the snow. |
Sinners then shall learn from me, And return, O God, to Thee Savior all my guilt remove, And my tongue shall sing Thy love Touch my silent lips, O Lord, And my mouth shall praise accord. |
O Great God. Words and Music: Bob Kauflin © 2006 Sovereign Grace Praise. Track 7 on Valley of Vision. Sheet music avaiable from Sovereign Grace Ministries. This song is based on the prayer “Regeneration.”
I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say #414. Text (1846): Horatius Bonar (1808-89). Tune: Kingsfold (1906), English folk tune, arr. Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958).
| I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Come unto Me and rest; Lay down, thou weary one, lay down Thy head upon My breast.” I came to Jesus as I was, Weary and worn and sad; I found in Him a resting place, And He has made me glad. |
I heard the voice of Jesus say, “I am this dark world’s Light; Look unto Me, thy morn shall rise, And all thy day be bright.” I looked to Jesus, and I found In Him my Star, my Sun; And in that light of life I’ll walk, Till traveling days are done. |
| I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Behold, I freely give The living water; thirsty one, Stoop down, and drink, and live.” I came to Jesus, and I drank Of that life giving stream; My thirst was quenched, my soul revived, And now I live in Him. |
Luke 13:10-17 (NIV): Jesus heals a crippled woman on the Sabbath, releasing her from her bondage.
Jesus, I Come #336. Words 1887: William T. Sleeper (1819-1904). Music: Greg Thompson © 2000 Greg Thomspon Music. Track 1 on Indelible Grace 3: For All the Saints, available from Indelible Grace Music. Music available online in the RUF Hymnbook. Our Scripture reading told of a woman whom Jesus brought out of bondage into his freedom.
| Out of my bondage, sorrow and night, Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come; Into Thy freedom, gladness and light, Jesus, I come to Thee. Out of my sickness into Thy health, Out of my want and into They wealth, Out of my sin and into Thyself, Jesus, I come to Thee. |
Out of unrest and arrogant pride, Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come; Into Thy blessed will to abide, Jesus, I come to Thee. Out of myself to dwell in Thy love, Out of despair into raptures above, Upward for aye on wings like a dove, Jesus, I come to Thee. |
| Out of my shameful failure and loss, Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come; Into the glorious gain of Thy cross, Jesus, I come to Thee. Out of earth’s sorrows into Thy balm, Out of life’s storms and into Thy calm, Out of distress to jubilant psalm, Jesus, I come to Thee. |
Out of the fear and dread of the tomb, Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come; Into the joy and light of Thy home, Jesus, I come to Thee. Out of the depths of ruin untold, Into the peace of Thy sheltering fold, Ever Thy glorious face to behold, Jesus, I come to Thee. |

Jesus, I am Resting, Resting #503. Text (1876): Jean S. Pigott. Music: David B. Hampton © 1998 New Spring Publishing. Track 5 on Matthew Smith’s album, All I Owe.
| Jesus, I am resting, resting, In the joy of what Thou art; I am finding out the greatness Of Thy loving heart. Thou hast bid me gaze upon Thee, And Thy beauty fills my soul, For by Thy transforming power, Thou hast made me whole. |
Simply trusting Thee, Lord Jesus, I behold Thee as Thou art, And Thy love, so pure, so changeless, Satisfies my heart; Satisfies its deepest longings, Meets, supplies its every need, Compasseth me round with blessings: Thine is love indeed! |
|
Jesus, I am resting, resting, In the joy of what Thou art; I am finding out the greatness Of Thy loving heart. |
|
| O, how great Thy loving kindness, Vaster, broader than the sea! O, how marvelous Thy goodness, Lavished all on me! Yes, I rest in Thee, Belovèd, Know what wealth of grace is Thine, Know Thy certainty of promise, And have made it mine. |
Ever lift Thy face upon me As I work and wait for Thee; Resting ’neath Thy smile, Lord Jesus, Earth’s dark shadows flee. Brightness of my Father’s glory, Sunshine of my Father’s face, Keep me ever trusting, resting, Fill me with Thy grace. |
O Love that will not Let Me Go #374. Text: George Matheson. Music: Christopher Miner ©1997 Christopher Miner Music. Track 5 on Indelible Grace, available from Indelible Grace Music. Music available online in the RUF Hymnbook.
| O Love that will not let me go, I rest my weary soul in thee; I give thee back the life I owe, That in thine ocean depths its flow May richer, fuller be. |
O Joy that seekest me through pain, I cannot close my heart to thee; I trace the rainbow through the rain, And feel the promise is not vain, That morn shall tearless be. |
| O light that followest all my way, I yield my flickering torch to thee; My heart restores its borrowed ray, That in thy sunshine’s blaze its day May brighter, fairer be. |
O Cross that liftest up my head, I dare not ask to fly from thee; I lay in dust life’s glory dead, And from the ground there blossoms red Life that shall endless be. |
Lord, support us all the day long of this troublous life, until the shadows lengthen and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, the fever of life is over and our work is done. Then, Lord, in thy mercy, grant us and those we love safe lodging, and holy rest and peace at the last. (John Henry Newman)
The numbers given after some of the titles refer to the pew hymnal used at PBCC, The Hymnal for Worship and Celebration (Waco: Word, 1986).
