Call to Worship: Psalm 130. One of the fifteen Songs of Ascent (Psalms 120-134; Septuagint & Latin Vulgate 119-133) sung by pilgrims as they made their way up to Jerusalem. This is also one of the seven penitential psalms designated as such since the 6th century or earlier: Pss 6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130, 143 [LXX/Vg: 6, 31, 37, 50, 101, 129, 142]. Psalm 130 (Vg 129) is frequently known by its opening words in Latin: De profundis (Out of the depths); it has frequently been set to music.

Out of the depths I cry to you, LORD;
  Lord, hear my voice.
Let your ears be attentive
  to my cry for mercy.

If you, LORD, kept a record of sins,
  Lord, who could stand?
But with you there is forgiveness,
  so that we can, with reverence, serve you.

I wait for the LORD, my whole being waits,
  and in his word I put my hope.
I wait for the Lord
  more than watchmen wait for the morning,
  more than watchmen wait for the morning.

Israel, put your hope in the LORD,
  for with the LORD is unfailing love
  and with him is full redemption.
He himself will redeem Israel
  from all their sins. (TNIV)

Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven #3. Words (1834): Henry F. Lyte (1793-1847), based on Psalm 103.

Praise, my soul, the King of heaven,
  To His feet thy tribute bring;
Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,
  Evermore His praises sing;
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Praise the everlasting King.
Fatherlike He tends and spares us;
  Well our feeble frame He knows.
In His hands He gently bears us,
  Rescues us from all our foes.
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Widely yet His mercy flows.
Praise Him for His grace and favor
  To our fathers in distress;
Praise Him, still the same as ever,
  Slow to chide and swift to bless;
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Glorious in his faithfulness.
Angels in the heights adore Him;
  Ye behold Him face to face;
Sun and moon, bow down before Him,
  Dwellers all in time and space.
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Praise with us the God of grace.

I Come Running. Words and Music: Mark Altrogge © 2005 Sovereign Grace Praise. How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds #94. Words, 1779: John Newton. Tune St Peter, 1836: Alexander Reinagle.

How sweet the Name of Jesus sounds
In a believer’s ear!
It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds,
And drives away his fear.
Jesus! my Shepherd, Husband, Friend,
O Prophet, Priest and King,
My Lord, my Life, my Way, my End,
Accept the praise I bring.
It makes the wounded spirit whole,
And calms the troubled breast;
’Tis manna to the hungry soul,
And to the weary, rest.
Weak is the effort of my heart,
And cold my warmest thought;
But when I see Thee as Thou art,
I’ll praise Thee as I ought.
Dear Name, the Rock on which I build,
My Shield and Hiding Place,
My never failing treasury, filled
With boundless stores of grace!
Till then I would Thy love proclaim
With every fleeting breath,
And may the music of Thy Name
Refresh my soul in death!

Scripture Reading

Romans 8:18-25.

I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. The creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.

We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. (TNIV)

Cup: Jesus, I Am Resting, Resting #503. Words, 1876: Jean S. Pigott. Tune: Tranquility, 1876, James Mountain.

Jesus, I am resting, resting,
In the joy of what Thou art;
I am finding out the greatness
Of Thy loving heart.
Thou hast bid me gaze upon Thee,
And Thy beauty fills my soul,
For by Thy transforming power,
Thou hast made me whole.
Simply trusting Thee, Lord Jesus,
I behold Thee as Thou art,
And Thy love, so pure, so changeless,
Satisfies my heart;
Satisfies its deepest longings,
Meets, supplies its every need,
Compasseth me round with blessings:
Thine is love indeed!
Jesus, I am resting, resting,
In the joy of what Thou art;
I am finding out the greatness
Of Thy loving heart.
O, how great Thy loving kindness,
Vaster, broader than the sea!
O, how marvelous Thy goodness,
Lavished all on me!
Yes, I rest in Thee, Belovèd,
Know what wealth of grace is Thine,
Know Thy certainty of promise,
And have made it mine.
Ever lift Thy face upon me
As I work and wait for Thee;
Resting ’neath Thy smile, Lord Jesus,
Earth’s dark shadows flee.
Brightness of my Father’s glory,
Sunshine of my Father’s face,
Keep me ever trusting, resting,
Fill me with Thy grace.
