Worship leader: Drew Hsi
Host: Larry Brown
Preacher: Bernard Bell
Prelude: Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken. Words, 1779: John Newton (1725-1807). Music: Kevin Twit © 1998 Kevin Twit Music.
Call to Worship: Psalm 46:1-7 (TNIV).
God is our refuge and strength, |
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, |
| The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. |
|
A Mighty Fortress #8. Words (1529): Martin Luther (1650-1680). Tune: Ein’ Feste Burg, Martin Luther. Inspired by Psalm 46.
| A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing: For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate, On earth is not his equal. |
And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us: The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him; His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure, One little word shall fell him. |
| Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing; Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God’s own choosing: Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He; Lord Sabaoth, His Name, from age to age the same, And He must win the battle. |
That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth; The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him Who with us sideth: Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still, His kingdom is forever. |
Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken #278. Words, 1779: John Newton (1725-1807). Music: Kevin Twit © 1998 Kevin Twit Music. Track 15 on Indelible Grace. Newton wrote five verses. This Indelible Grace version uses verses 1-2, 4-5. The omitted verse 3 is “Round each habitation hov’ring, see the cloud and fire appear for a glory and a cov’ring, showing that the Lord is near: thus deriving from their banner light by night and shade by day, safe they feed upon the manna which he gives them when they pray.”
| Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God; he whose word cannot be broken formed thee for his own abode: on the Rock of Ages founded, what can shake thy sure repose? With salvation’s walls surrounded, thou may’st smile at all thy foes. |
Blessed inhabitants of Zion, Washed in the Redeemer’s blood! Jesus, Whom their souls rely on, Makes them kings and priests to God. ’Tis His love His people raises, Over self to reign as kings And, as priests, His solemn praises Each for a thank offering brings. |
| See, the streams of living waters, springing from eternal love, well supply thy sons and daughters, and all fear of want remove: who can faint, while such a river ever flows their thirst t’assuage? grace which, like the Lord, the giver, never fails from age to age. |
Savior, if of Zion’s city I, through grace, a member am, let the world deride or pity, I will glory in thy name: fading is the worldling’s pleasure, all his boasted pomp and show; solid joys and lasting treasure none but Zion’s children know. |

Psalm 62 [My Soul Finds Rest]. Words and music: Aaron Keyes. Track 2 on Not Guilty Anymore.
By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. (Hebrews 11:8-10 TNIV)
By Faith. Words and music: Keith & Kristyn Getty & Stuart Townend. Track 5 on Awaken the Dawn (2009). Verse 2 captures the thought of the Scripture reading:
By faith our fathers roamed the earth
With the power of His promise in their hearts
Of a holy city built by God’s own hand
A place where peace and justice reign.
